Some say it’s Parramatta’s growing skyline that is a symbol of its growth as a second Sydney CBD. Some say it’s the increasing density of businesses and government services. But the true sign is a growing bar and food scene chasing down the heels of Sydney’s CBD – and Nick & Nora’s is a speakeasy rooftop bar that really pushes that inner-city chic and elegance out into the west, and even if you’re not in the area, the service, quality and views make the journey out well worth the effort.

Venturing up to the 26th floor of 45 Macquarie St – a sort walk from Parramatta Station – you are greeted with levels of opulence normally reserved for private members clubs from the 30s. Velvet, gilded wood, gold and all manor of art deco chic fill a room dominated by that high and well-lit back-bar, sporting everything you can think of including over 600 whiskies. Library runner ladders mean the skilled and knowledgeable bartenders can grab whatever your heart desires with ease – and if you’re paying for something on the top shelf, at least you get to see them work more for your money!
Both sides of this spacious room open up to terraces. One facing over the suburbs of Western Sydney and onto the Blue Mountains, making for a gorgeous sunset spot where you can’t help but feel “above it all” in the process. Out to the other side and you get a top-down view of the growing Paramatta skyline, from new towering skyscrapers to construction zones 26 floors below. The views are sure to impress no matter which side your on, but it’s well worth trying to get a spot on the Western side if you’re there in time for sunset.
The service and quality of drinks is excellent. An exciting range of house special cocktails – similar to that which you would see at other venues by the Speakeasy Group such as Eau De Vie – are coupled with experienced bartenders that can effortlessly make you any classic you can think of. And make it well. Not to mention Champagne tower Fridays, where a glass from the tower is only $5 until sold out… count me in! Match this with some banging snacks and sharing plates (think Kangaroo prosciutto, pork belly and pumpkin arancini just to name a few… great now I’m hungry writing this…) and you have a sure fire recipe for an elegant and luxurious night in what is fast becoming Sydney’s second CBD.
So whether you love a drink with a view, an expertly crafted cocktail, a champagne tower and nibblies after work or just the ability to show off that when in the area “you know the place to go”, Nick & Nora’s is a sensorial experience not to be missed.
